Cataract Surgery

February 4, 2022 by Dr Mark B Burdorf

Common eye surgery lowered dementia risk substantially

Eye Brain Health ConnectionAdults who have undergone cataract surgery have a lower chance of developing dementia, a new University of Washington study reported. This is an exciting finding that could open the door to understanding further connections between the health of the eyes and the brain.

According to the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, older adults who have had cataract surgery had a nearly 30% lower risk of developing dementia for at least 10 years after the operation, compared to those who did not.

The brain is a sensory and motor dependent system that allows the brain to thrive or deteriorate. The three most powerful sensory stimuli are visual, vestibular, and cerebellar. Stimulating the cerebellum is usually accomplished with chiropractic applications, exercise, acupuncture, and balance training.

Vestibular injuries can come from concussions as well auditory damage. That damage may have come from loud noises, such as too many rock concerts back in the day or artillery noise from serving in the military.

Ignoring spine and brain Injuries over time will not heal them. Instead, start with making a complimentary consultation at my office. I focus on neurological diagnostics and rehabilitation. Schedule at 480-951-5006 or drburdorf.com.
