Low Level Laser Therapy
Are you suffering from pain somewhere in your body? Dr. Burdorf uses modern technology for acute and chronic pain management, inflammation and natural healing without the side effects of NSAIDS (Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs such as ibuprofen, Advil and Motrin). Low Level Laser Therapy has been found to reduce pain, swelling, and spasms in our patients while helping to speed up the healing process. Dr. Burdorf specifically uses Erchonia lasers to promote healing of injuries.
What is Low Level Laser Therapy?
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or Cold Laser Therapy is a treatment that applies specific wavelengths of light to the surface of the body near an area that has damaged or hurting tissue.
Low Level Laser Therapy, which is also called cold laser, has been FDA approved in the United States since February 2002. We have been using it since 2004 in our office. Side effects and contraindications are minimal compared to traditional pharmacology.
How Does Low Level Laser Therapy Work?
All light has an effect on the cells of the human body. What that effect is shall be determined by the wavelengths of light applied. The cold laser produces a beam of light that has a specific wavelength and frequency. When a cell is injured, it lacks sufficient energy to perform normal functions. One of the first functions it loses is the ability to rid itself of waste or toxins. Accumulation of toxins creates swelling of a cell. Millions of similar cells swelling together create inflammation.
Any of those words that have -itis as a suffix means inflammation. For example, tendonitis is the inflammation of a tendon, bursitis is bursa inflammation, sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses, neuritis is inflammation of the nerves.
Injuries Treated With Laser Therapy Heal Faster
Much research has been done in the areas of pain management, wound healing, and nerve regeneration. Laser therapy has a strengthening effect on tissue repair. It improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage and is an effective means of relief for many pain syndromes. It can improve immune response.
