Comorbidity & Illness

March 15, 2021 by Dr Mark B Burdorf

Comorbidity and Illness

Test blood for comorbiditiesHere we are a year later. We’ve had the ups and downs of COVID-19 cases, and some people have died as a result of it.

As research shows, underlying diseases that you might not be aware you have, such as cardiac or liver, kidney, pancreatic, or lung cancer could cause you to have a very poor outcome when exposed to COVID-19. Therefore, COVID can be so dangerous to some but not others. It is not how you feel, but your true state of health that makes the difference in surviving COVID.

It is established that people who get extremely sick and die from COVID have comorbidities. They were already sick, and COVID pushed them over the edge. They would likely have survived except their system was too weak when they got COVID. There are people with “hidden conditions” or maybe several minor problems that, when combined, can give an awfully bad outcome when exposed to COVID.

What can we do to protect ourselves from COVID-19 and other disease?

Blood levels of Vitamin D and other specific lab tests are useful predictors of health status and how well you will fight off infections and diseases like COVID-19.

I have a practice focus in neurology and nutrition, and I will guide you in staying healthy and minimizing your risks of getting sick from COVID or even the flu. When I look at blood work, there are Healthy ranges and Clinical ranges. Clinical ranges are broader numbers because it is a combination of healthy and sick people. The worse the clinical number, the higher the comorbidity risk. For example, a medical doctor will tell you a Vitamin D level of 30 is “okay”. Who wants to just be “okay”? I am going to tell you a level of 50 to 70 is healthy.

If it has been more than six months since you had your blood tested, get some blood work done. The absolute minimum is a Comprehensive Metabolic, CBC, Lipid, and Vitamin D. We offer a self -pay pricing, so contact us for details before you schedule your blood test.

Schedule here for an in-office consultation, or email me at mark@drburdorf.com to set up a virtual, Tele-Nutrition consultation.

Treating the root cause of your condition, not just your symptoms, is the fastest way to recovery and is the best way to obtain optimal health and wellness.
